While U.S. average gas prices rose over the past week because of a Midwest refinery issue, prices in the Charlotte area continued to decline.

Charlotte drivers are currently paying 94 cents less per gallon of unleaded gas than they did last year, and drivers statewide are paying 99 cents less on average, according to auto group AAA.

South Carolina has the cheapest gas in the country, and drivers there pay 19 cents less per gallon of gas than North Carolina drivers on average.

AAA said national average prices rose 8 cents over the week because BP unexpectedly shut down the largest of its three crude distillation units at its Whiting, Ind., refinery on Saturday.

Below are gas prices from around our region and nationwide. AAA surveys 120,000 stations across the U.S. to determine average prices.
