Hiring underway at Ballantyne Wegmans. When can we expect it to open?
Wegmans Food Markets has begun hiring for full-time employees for its highly anticipated first grocery store in Charlotte, the company said Wednesday.
Wegmans broke ground in September in Ballantyne at 11550 North Community House Road. The south Charlotte store is expected to open this fall, but the company has not announced an opening date yet.
The Rochester, N.Y., grocer plans to employ about 450 workers at the Charlotte store, including 150 full-time employees.
“We’re looking to hire friendly people who are passionate about food and ready to grow their career with us,” said Wegmans Charlotte Store Manager Patrick McGuinness, who has worked at Wegmans for 26 years.
Available full-time positions include entry-level management to customer service positions in bakery, produce, overnight grocery and culinary roles such as chefs and line cooks.
Wegmans has a massive following from Northern transplants who miss its products offerings, such as its brand of bison french onion dip and queso, assorted hot dog regional brands like Zweigle’s and Hoffman’s, chocolate cake, and its cheese cave.

What to expect applying for a job at Wegmans
Interviews will be conducted by appointment only.
All candidates who accept a position will begin paid training immediately at one of Wegmans’ stores in the Triangle region in Cary, Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Wake Forest. Training will run through August, with hotel accommodations and mileage reimbursement provided, Wegmans spokeswoman Marcie Rivera said.
Wegmans offers competitive pay and benefits packages, premium pay on Sundays and holidays, flexible scheduling and tuition assistance for all employees. For entry level management positions, the pay range is from $19.75 to $22.50, according to Wegmans. For customer service, the range is $16.50 to $17.
The company promotes from within and already has plans to open morel stores in the Charlotte region.
McGuinness started as a night manager in Erie, Pennsylvania, and was promoted to several management positions before becoming a store manager for multiple stores, most recently at Wake Forest for over four years. He said he’s moved about six times with the company.
McGuinness said he has been able to dabble in learning more about what interests him.
“You have the freedom to learn and are given the tools to help with that process,” he said. “They do a great job of taking care of you and making sure you know you matter.”
McGuinness has three sisters and a brother-in-law who also work for Wegmans stores, as well as two of his four children.
Wegmans plans to open three to five stores in the Charlotte market, The Charlotte Observer previously reported. Wegmans is considering a couple dozen locations including SouthPark, Huntersville and Cornelius.

Wegmans is investing $34.7 million in the 112,162-square-foot Ballantyne store. Wegmans purchased the more than 14-acre property for $5.5 million last January.
After years of speculation by Northeast transplants and others around town, Wegmans confirmed plans in April 2024 that it would be coming to Charlotte, receiving hundreds of requests for a store in the Charlotte area. A Facebook group named “Bring Wegmans to Charlotte” was created nine years ago and has over 8,000 followers.
Wegmans opened its first store in North Carolina in the Raleigh area in September 2019. It has since captured the No. 6 spot by marketshare in the Triangle area, News & Observer reported, behind Walmart, Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Target and Costco, respectively.
The 108-year-old, family-owned Wegmans supermarket chain has about 54,000 employees and 114 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Delaware and Washington, D.C.
