Charlotte airport braces for widespread disruptions from incoming winter storm

As Winter Storm Fern prepares to blanket the South with heavy ice and snow, officials at Charlotte’s airport are monitoring the forecast and stand ready to implement additional safety protocols as needed.

According to a Thursday update, Charlotte Douglas International Airport currently remains open and operational. Despite the approaching storm, FlightAware data showed that Charlotte Douglas had experienced minimal delays or cancellations as of 11 a.m. Thursday.

The data indicated zero cancellations and more than 40 delays around noon.

However, that status is expected to change if or when conditions worsen. CLT airport officials warned that weather-related events can significantly impact schedules and advised passengers to prepare for widespread disruptions across the flight network.

To combat the winter weather, the Charlotte airport’s snow teams are deploying a fleet of more than 40 vehicles equipped for deicing and snow removal. The airport, which is certified by the National Weather Service as a Storm Ready facility, is already pretreating parking lots and decks with deicing materials to maintain accessibility for travelers.

The aviation department is maintaining close communication with its hub carrier, American Airlines, which accounts for approximately 90% of the airport’s daily flights.

To assist passengers ahead of the storm, American Airlines is waiving change fees this weekend for customers traveling to, through, or from Charlotte. Travelers can find additional details and manage their bookings at aa.com.

Airport officials urge all passengers to confirm their flight status directly with their airline before going to the airport.
