Former Sycamore Brewing makes another move in rebrand after co-founder’s arrest

Plans for Sycamore Brewing’s rebrand to Club West Brewing following its co-founder’s arrest continues to move forward. The brewery wants the city to approve signage with its new name.

A “Zoning Use Permit and Sign Permits” was filed to the city of Charlotte last week for 2151 Hawkins St., according to a review of city records. That’s the location for Sycamore Brewing.

The permit’s project description is titled “Club West” and the request is seeking to fabricate and install two sets of LED signage. Businesses are required to get approval from the city to install new signs to ensure they are erected correctly.

The signs: Club West Brewing’s new logo in yellow and gray. They’ll be illuminated and placed in the front of the brewery.

The request may signal Sycamore’s continued transition to rebrand following the arrest of co-owner Justin Tawse Brigham on child rape charges.

Other brewery changes after the arrest

Brigham, 44, was charged Dec. 11 with statutory rape of a child under 15, first-degree burglary and indecent liberties with a child.

After the arrest, co-owner Sarah Louise Taylor removed Brigham from the business. Taylor had founded the business with Brigham, her husband at the time. After his arrest, she also filed for divorce.

And last month, Sycamore changed the name of its limited liability company to Club West Brewing, according to a NC Secretary of State filing. Taylor was listed as the managing member on the filing.

The name-change filing came days after Sycamore closed its South End taproom indefinitely to “allow space for processing, healing and beginning the work of reimagining this community space,” Taylor had announced in a late December letter to the community.

Taylor declined Monday to comment on the signage permit. The permit would need to be approved by the city before any signage is installed.

About Sycamore Brewing and Club West

Sycamore was one of Charlotte’s largest and popular breweries before Brigham’s arrest.

Restaurants and retailers immediately dropped the brewer’s products and the brewery was removed from the Charlotte airport after opening there three years ago. Plans to expand the brewery to “a family-friendly” site in Cotswold Village Shopping Center also ceased.

Since then, the brewery has moved to distance itself from the incident, with moves that include the name change.

A website under the Club West Brewing name indicates that it will open in the spring. The motto appears to be “Beer. Redefined.”
