North Carolina is home to some of the nation’s best places to work, and the Charlotte area is no exception, new rankings show.

Nine businesses based in the Charlotte region rank among the nation’s top employers. To create the lists, the business website Forbes said it joined researchers at Statista to conduct an online survey of more than 217,000 workers.

“Survey respondents were asked if they would recommend their employer to others and to rate it based on a range of criteria, including wages, work-life balance, leadership training and opportunities to advance. Participants were also asked if they would recommend their previous employers” as well as other companies they know about, Forbes wrote in a Tuesday, Feb. 10 report.

Top-ranked large companies in Charlotte area

As Forbes determined the nation’s top-notch employers, it defined large companies as those with more than 5,000 workers.

The Charlotte-based business that ranked the highest was Bank of America, which landed at No. 81. The company employs roughly 213,000 people and plans to invest $10 billion in artificial intelligence and technology this year, the Charlotte Observer recently reported.

Here’s where other big Charlotte-area companies ranked among the top 700 in the country:

  • Duke Energy in Charlotte at No. 216
  • Honeywell International in Charlotte at No. 234
  • Nucor in Charlotte at No. 339
  • Elior North America in Charlotte at No. 361
  • Trane Technologies in Davidson at No. 492

Top-ranked midsize companies in Charlotte

Forbes also named the nation’s best midsize companies, which have 1,000 to 5,000 workers.

In Charlotte, the business topping that category was Brighthouse Financial at No. 236. The insurance company was sold to a New York-based private equity firm this fall, but it’s still expected to be headquartered in the Queen City, the Observer reported in November.

Two other Charlotte employers ranked among the nation’s top 500 midsize places to work. Here’s how they fared on Forbes’ list:

  • Autobell Car Wash at No. 421
  • Rack Room Shoes at No. 469

Charlotte-based companies weren’t the only North Carolina employers on these Forbes lists; 14 Triangle-based companies were included too, topped by Duke University Health System in Durham and Epic Games in Cary.

Nationwide, the California-based grocery chain Trader Joe’s was crowned the best large employer. Toll Brothers, a home builder headquartered in Pennsylvania, topped the list for midsize employers.
