After south Charlotte company loses a contract, over 80 workers will be laid off

A Charlotte third-party logistics company will be permanently laying off over 80 people by mid-May.

Due to a cancelled contract, Kenco Logistic Services will no longer serve its client at 11907 General Drive off of Westinghouse Boulevard, close to the South Carolina border.

Kenco will be laying off 86 workers by May 17, according to an N.C. Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) report filed last week with the North Carolina Department of Commerce. Such notices are required by federal law during mass layoffs.

It’s unclear whom Kenco was contracted with or why the contract was cancelled. Kenco did not immediately return a request for comment Monday. But the warehouse’s address is connected to a Frito-Lay and PepsiCo regional site.

Kenco told the state the client will remain at the warehouse and another third-party logistics provider will take over the site. That new provider has offered Kenco workers employment opportunities, according to the WARN report.

If those employees are hired, they’ll continue working at the warehouse, the report added.
