Lexus Resale Value: 5 Models That Stay Expensive Used
Lexus is a consistent top performer in the luxury segment, often exceeding the sales figures of top European manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Part of its success in the US is rooted in the brand's ability to echo Toyota's reputation for unparalleled reliability in a more refined, premium experience. Lexus prioritizes long-term owner satisfaction by delivering solid build quality and a comfortable driving experience instead of chasing the latest fads.
This focus creates a loyal customer base and a high level of confidence in the brand's longevity. As we will see, this reputation translates directly into the used car market, where Lexus vehicles frequently command some of the highest prices in their respective segments.
To find the top performers, we looked for the five Lexus models with the best resale values over the past five-years. We used data from AutoTempest, Edmunds, and Kelley Blue Book to determine how much value these cars have retained, and arranged them in descending order.
Lexus GX
- Second Generation: 2010–2023
- Average Used Price (5 Years Old): $39,000 – $48,000
- Estimated New Cost (Inc. Tax & Options): $61,500 – $73,800
- Percentage Drop: 35.7%
The second-generation Lexus GX 460 was a rarity in its segment: a body-on-frame luxury SUV with genuine off-road capabilities. It became a favorite in the overlanding community because it offers Lexus luxury in a package that can stand up to the toughest conditions. These older GX models also make use of hardy V8 naturally aspirated engines mated to a rugged 6-speed automatic transmission.
Because Lexus kept this model largely unchanged for over a decade, parts are plentiful and mechanics know them inside and out. Compared to its impressive but far more complex replacement, the GX is a relatively simple but still very capable luxury SUV. It remains very popular as a used buy, and on average, five-year-old models have lost just over 35% of their value.
Lexus LX
- Third Generation: 2008–2021
- Average Used Price (5 Years Old): $62,000 – $74,000
- Estimated New Cost (Inc. Tax & Options): $102,500 – $109,200
- Percentage Drop: 35.8%
The Lexus LX has long been the default choice for many who want a luxury SUV that can actually handle serious off-roading, too. Based on the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser platform, the previous generation LX 570 featured a massive 5.7-liter V8 engine known for its durability and longevity.
Its incredible resale value is driven by the fact that the 2021 model was the final year of this generation and the current model has moved to turbocharged power units. Aside from pretty horrendous fuel economy and pricey servicing costs, the third-generation LX is a superb SUV that should also outlast most other vehicles on the road today.
Lexus RX
- Fourth Generation: 2016–2022
- Average Used Price (5 Years Old): $33,000 – $42,000
- Estimated New Cost (Inc. Tax & Options): $53,400 – $64,200
- Percentage Drop: 36.2%
The fifth-generation RX is Lexus' best-selling new model. The popularity of the older version on the used market is just as strong, thanks to a solid build quality, great engine options and an enviable mix of luxury and practicality. Used values remain high because the RX offers a low-risk entry into luxury motoring, providing the prestige of the Lexus badge with maintenance costs that are often significantly lower than its German counterparts. Stick to the 3.5-liter V6 RX 350 as it offers decent performance and has proven to be extremely reliable.
Lexus NX
- First Generation: 2015–2021
- Average Used Price (5 Years Old): $26,000 – $34,000
- Estimated New Cost (Inc. Tax & Options): $43,800 – $52,600
- Percentage Drop: 37.8%
The NX is the compact sibling to the RX and serves as a popular entry point into the luxury SUV market. The 2021 model was the final year of the first-generation models, so most of the issues and bugs would have been worked out by that point. Being based on the well resolved Toyota RAV4 is also a plus point. But, aside from the promise of low running costs and solid reliability, the NX has a high-quality interior that resist wear and tear remarkably well.
The older generation 2021 NX also featured a more traditional interior layout with physical buttons, something many used car buyers actually prefer over the touchscreen-dependent interiors of newer models. All this translates into impressive retained values and a great family vehicle.
Lexus IS
- Third Generation: 2014–Present
- Average Used Price (5 Years Old): $31,000 – $40,000
- Estimated New Cost (Inc. Tax & Options): $46,200 – $58,500
- Percentage Drop: 39.4%
The Lexus IS sports sedan has been around for so long you'd be forgiven for thinking that Lexus simply forgot about it. But regular updates have kept it fresh, and a major refresh for the 2021 model year improved its handling and gave it a more modern look while keeping the reliable powertrains from previous years.
This model year is sought after because it offers a newer look and updated tech but won't cost you a bundle in depreciation. In fact, the average 2021 IS lost just 39.4% of its original value over five years. Combine that with servicing costs that won't break the bank, and you can understand why it remains so popular.
