Overview

The 2025 BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe is a luxury high-performance midsize sedan, and it's now reached the end of the line, with this being its last model year (the non-M 8 Series models will continue into MY2026).

The 2025 BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe is the four-door variant of BMW's flagship M car. The S63 twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 produces 617 hp and 553 lb-ft through an 8-speed auto and M xDrive AWD. Edmunds tested 3.1 seconds to 60; Car and Driver recorded 2.5 seconds and a 10.7-second quarter mile. Top speed is 155 mph (190 with M Driver's Package). Sold exclusively in Competition trim. The Gran Coupe adds nine inches over the two-door for improved rear access. Best suited for buyers wanting the fastest four-door BMW with pure V8 power.

What's New for 2025?

The 2025 M8 Competition Gran Coupe is essentially a carryover model entering its sixth and final model year completely unchanged. It last received meaningful updates for 2023. What does change is the price, which increases by $1,575; the 2025 BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe's price now starts at $141,375 before options.

Exterior

The Gran Coupe stretches the M8 into what's arguably its most elegant configuration - that of a midsize 4-door fastback. At 200.9 inches long, it's essentially the same size as a modern-day 5 Series sedan. It looks the M part with aggressive M-specific bumpers, 20-inch forged alloy wheels, and quad exhausts. An optional M Carbon Fiber Exterior package adds various carbon-fiber elements. Adaptive LED headlights with laser technology high beams are standard, and the GC has frameless doors.

Interior

The cabin takes you back to an older era of BMW cabins, with solid, classy materials and dual (separate) 12.3- inch displays, not the continuous glass cockpits of modern BMWs. The iDrive 7 infotainment is also old hat now, but it does incorporate wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Wi-Fi, a head-up display, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

Leather upholstery is standard, and the front seats, steering wheel, and armrests are heated. The front seats can be upgraded to carbon-fiber buckets. The rear seats can be optionally heated. The rear quarters are snug but adequate for adults, with 36.6 inches of legroom and 37.1 inches of headroom. The trunk measures a generous 15.5 cu-ft.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • 617-hp V8 with no hybrid system delivers pure internal combustion character
  • 0-60 mph in just 3.0 seconds
  • Four usable doors and rear seats add genuine daily practicality over the coupe
  • Priced identically to the two-door coupe with more interior space

Cons:

  • iDrive 7 infotainment is two generations behind current BMW models
  • 17 mpg combined and $1,000 gas guzzler tax increase ownership costs
  • Production ended in October 2025
  • Firm ride over rough pavement can be jarring even in Comfort mode

Verdict

The M8 Gran Coupe is arguably the best way to experience the M8, with a gorgeous fastback shape that's also a lot more practical than the coupe, and all the performance of that twin-turbo 4.4L V8 that will slingshot you to 60 mph in three seconds flat. It's an old-school gas sports sedan with no hybrid assistance and a usable back seat, if you can live with the fuel consumption. Production has ended, and the M8 Gran Coupe goes out with a bang.
