Capital One unveils unusual South End Charlotte bank branch. Go if you’re hungry.

Digital bank Capital One is planning to have a physical presence in Charlotte. And it’s nothing like a typical bank branch.

The sixth-largest U.S. bank by assets, Capital One submitted sketch plans on Tuesday for a proposed site plan for a Capital One Cafe at 1520 S. Tryon St., city records show. It’s the South End site of the former Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art, which last year rebranded to SE CLT Gallery and moved to 2137 South Blvd.

The sketch shows a walk-up ATM near the entrance to the one-story, 10,463-square-foot brick building, plus outdoor patio seating. The site plan also includes landscape changes, bike lockers and EV spots among 20 parking spaces.

Capital One officials did not respond to a request for comment.

The property last sold in 2023 to OMS PFG LLC for nearly $8.5 million, Mecklenburg County property records show. The limited liability company is linked to commercial real estate firm OmShera Holdings. The company website lists its South End property under development, but does not include an address or any other information.

The proposed project comes four months after the credit card giant announced plans for a 14,000-square-foot lounge at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Concourse A. It’s expected to open in late 2027 or 2028.

What is Capital One Cafe in Charlotte?

Capital One Café is part bank, part café, according to the company.

Last month, the McLean, Virginia digital bank debuted its cafe concept in North Carolina at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham.

The full-service coffee bar has free Wi-Fi, an in-store ATM, plus lattes and pastries. The coffee bar from Verve Coffee Roasters also serves teas and a food menu for breakfast, lunch, snacks and to-go.

In-person support for banking questions is also available.

“While we don’t have traditional bank tellers in our cafes, customers can get everyday banking done, even on the weekend at all of our locations,” according to Capital One.

There’s also perks for Capital One debit and credit card holders, who get half-priced beverages using their card.

Account holders also can reserve semi-private nook workspace. Most cafes also offer a community room that can be reserved by local groups.

Capital One Café has more than 60 locations in 18 states and Washington, D.C.
