Neighborhood Theatre in NoDa shutting down for 8 weeks. What happens next?

NoDa’s popular Neighborhood Theatre music venue said Tuesday it is closing for eight weeks this summer to upgrade its space.

The Neighborhood Theatre renovations, which are set to start Tuesday, June 16, will include new lighting and sound systems for both stages, upgraded artist dressing rooms, improved acoustics, a draft bar, a reserved balcony and renovated restrooms.

The venue at 511 E 36th St. is expected to reopen on Aug. 11 with a show from Franz Ferdinand, the Grammy award-nominated Scottish rock band. A spokesperson for the theater declined to disclose the cost of renovations.

“This theater belongs to the community, and these improvements are all about giving the people of NoDa and Charlotte the kind of venue they deserve,” said Justin Fedor, general manager of Neighborhood Theatre, in a statement.

During the closure, Neighborhood Theatre plans to continue booking performances and planning reopening events.

About Neighborhood Theatre in NoDa

Neighborhood Theatre will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2027.

The building was originally a movie theater called the Astor Theatre. It opened in 1945 and closed in the 1970s, according to Neighborhood Theatre’s website.

In 1997, it reopened with new ownership as a live performance venue following renovations, according to Observer archives. The ownership has since changed.

In February 2025, Nashville, Tennessee-based Stage Right Venues became a half-owner of Neighborhood Theatre. While a group of Charlotte investors own the other half of the venue, this change marked the first time the space was not solely locally owned.

The two-stage venue has long hosted local, regional and national acts. It has a capacity for 956 people and about 50 employees, mostly on per-gig basis, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.
