Suburban Charlotte manufacturer has abruptly laid off over 60 workers

A fencing and deck manufacturer has laid off over 60 workers in Rowan County with no notice.

Barrette Outdoor Living Inc. operates a manufacturing site in Salisbury, which is about 45 miles north of Charlotte. It produces outdoor products.

The manufacturer informed employees and the state on Wednesday that it would be laying off 63 workers, effectively immediately, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) report filed on July 1. Such notices are required by federal law during mass layoffs. The report was made available on July 2.

“Revenue decline and economic downturn” were two of the reasons for the immediate layoff, the manufacturer said the in the report.

It’s unclear why workers or the state weren’t given more notice of the layoffs. Barrette did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday.

But the manufacturer has undergone several rebranding and acquisitions in the past few years.

And layoffs.

Last year, Barrette laid off 306 people from its site in New York and New Jersey.

Seven months ago, Barrette posted on LinkedIn that the “Barrette Outdoor Living” brand was being sunsetted after its acquisition by Oldcastle APG, another outdoor product manufacturer.

It’s unclear if this rebranding was part of the reason for the layoffs.

About Barrette Outdoor Living

Barrette is based in Ohio and began operating in 1975.

The manufacturer was acquired by Oldcastle APG in 2021. At the time, Barrette had 10 manufacturing facilities and four distribution sites across in the U.S. and Canada, according to a news release from Oldcastle.

Oldcastle has been on its own acquisition run. Last year, Oldcastle acquired Eastern Wholesale Fence, which had a facility in Salisbury.
