As SouthPark mall undergoes a significant renovation project, Verizon customers shopping there will better be able to send texts and post to social media.
Verizon’s recently installed equipment at the mall will bring smartphone and tablet users improved wireless coverage and faster data speeds, according to a statement from the carrier this week.
The company said it added special equipment on the mall’s “distributed antenna system,” a network of antennas that delivers service within the geographical area of a large building where steel and concrete interfere with wireless signals. The antenna systems are common in high-traffic areas like stadiums, malls and convention centers.
“The network improvements mean more people will be able to access and share data quicker from their Verizon smartphones and tablets, especially during high traffic shopping seasons,” said Sergei Mislevy, Verizon Wireless Carolinas/Tennessee Region executive director.
Interior and exterior renovations to the south Charlotte mall – which include new luxury seating areas and landscaping – are being done at night, so the mall remains open. The project is expected to wrap up by the holiday shopping season.
Earlier this week, Verizon said it installed equipment on the antenna system at the Bank of America Stadium during the offseason, so fans should get better service and faster data speeds. Sprint and AT&T users have also enjoyed faster speeds during preseason games, the team said.
