Huntersville-based American Tire Distributors has named US Foods executive Stuart Schuette its new chief executive officer, effective Jan. 4, 2016. Schuette succeeds Bill Berry, who said earlier this year he is retiring.

American Tire Distributors, also known as ATD, says it is one of the largest distributors of replacement tires in North America. The company has been growing rapidly thanks to post-recession demand in the tire replacement market, as well as through acquisitions and investment from private equity firms.

Schuette most recently served as chief operating officer of Illinois-based US Foods, one of the largest food service distribution companies in the U.S. During his 20-year tenure there, Schuette held a variety of sales, finance and operations positions and most recently helped facilitate the transformation of the US Foods brand, sales and functional organization, ATD said.

Schuette holds a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University.

“Stuart’s broad experience and record of achievement in the food-service distribution industry positions him well to lead ATD,” outgoing CEO Berry said in a statement this week.

ATD, originally founded as J.H. Heafner Co. in Lincolnton in 1935, landed at No. 514 on Fortune’s most recent annual list of companies ranked by revenue. As of this summer, ATD employed 474 at its Huntersville corporate office, 43 at its Charlotte distribution center and 53 at its Lincolnton mixing center.
