Prices at the pump in the Charlotte area and beyond continue to fall.

The average cost of a gallon of unleaded gas in the Charlotte metro area dropped 2 cents over the week, according to auto group AAA. Average prices fell 3 cents in North Carolina and 2 cents in South Carolina.

Heading into 2016, the national average gas price is expected to keep declining because supply should continue to outpace demand, AAA said in a report this week. Last week, motorists paid the least for gas over Christmas in almost seven years.

Ongoing and unexpected maintenance at a California refinery has kept gas prices higher in the region and could contribute to volatility in the national average cost for the rest of the year, AAA said. California drivers pay the most for gas ($2.84), while those in Missouri pay the least ($1.70.)

Below are the current Charlotte-area, state and national average costs as of early Tuesday. AAA surveys 120,000 gas stations nationwide to determine average prices.
