Electrolux debuts ‘smart oven’ that lets you control temperature from smartphone
A new Electrolux smart oven that runs on a recently adopted Google technology allows users to remotely control the oven’s temperature, watch their food cooking from a smartphone and share the results on social media.
It’s the kind of development aimed at positioning the manufacturer, which has its North American headquarters in Charlotte, as a leader in Web-connected appliances.
At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, Electrolux said it is one of the early adopters of Google’s Brillo operating system and Weave service, a communication platform that enables device interaction from a mobile phone or the Web. The partnership started in September.
At the conference, Electrolux introduced the new smart oven as one that runs on the Weave/Brillo technologies. The connected steam ovens come equipped with an interior camera that provides a live feed to a mobile device (iOS or Android) of whatever food is being cooked inside.
Through an accompanying app, users can control the temperature, humidity level and function of the oven, Electrolux said.
The app also provides a database of hundreds of recipes. And its social feed section allows users to share their cooking results with their social network.
“We have a consumer-focused approach to connected appliances and believe that smart homes will become truly interesting to consumers when we offer products and services that enhance the experience of their everyday tasks,” said Jan Brockmann, Electrolux’s chief operations officer and head of research and development.
Several connected appliances rolled out in North America recently were designed and developed at Electrolux’s north Charlotte research and development facility. Some include a room air conditioner that can be controlled remotely via mobile app, as well as connected freezers that alert customers away from home via an app when a storm shuts off power.
