Craig Moon, who owns four weekly newspapers in the Lake Norman area, has been named publisher of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, that paper said Thursday.

Moon, 65, is former publisher of USA Today, which he left in 2009. He acquired the Denver Weekly, the Herald Weekly, the Mooresville Weekly and the Mountain Island Monitor in 2011.

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, a billionaire known for being active in Republican politics, acquired the Review-Jounal late in December. The acquisition was controversial because Adelson and his family did not initially disclose their ownership of the newspaper, leading to widespread speculation about who was the mystery buyer.

Moon could not immediately be reached for comment. According to the Review-Journal, he was in Las Vegas on Thursday to meet with the newspaper’s staff. He plans to move to that city.

“Leading the Las Vegas Review-Journal is an exciting opportunity,” Moon said in a statement, according to the Review-Journal. “I understand ownership transitions can create questions among staff and readers alike. I intend to answer these questions with my actions.”
