Duke Energy has made $500,000 in grants for environmental and economic development programs in the Dan River basin, scene of its 2014 coal ash spill.

The money comes from Duke’s $10 million Water Resources Fund, which was established two years ago. Since then Duke has granted more than $1.6 million to projects and programs in the Dan River basin.

The grants announced Thursday will be shared by the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region’s RiverBank Fund and the Rockingham County Community Foundation.
