Notable Items

Mike Burriss, vice president of construction management at Metcon Inc., was elected president of Construction Professional Network of North Carolina for 2014-2015. CPN of North Carolina Inc. is a statewide organization of business and professional leaders who are involved with design, construction and related services.

Rick Eldridge and Chris Cates, co-owners of ReelWorks Studios, are branching off to pursue niche areas of interest in the entertainment industry. Silver Hammer Studios building, which housed ReelWorks, is now C3 Studios, of which Cates is founder and CEO. Cates completed the transition for C3 in early March, and the company is scheduled to start pre-production on two films starting this spring. C3 will continue to provide comprehensive production and post-production services in film and television to Charlotte and the overall media community as well as the development and production of films and projects targeted toward a Christian market.

Fleet Feet Sports, a franchise specializing in walking and running products, is coming to Fort Mill in May. Owners Catherine and Dave Foerster will open their 2,500-square-foot store at 1750 Highway 160 West, Suite 117. Fleet Feet Sports has 100 locally owned and operated stores throughout the United States. The Fort Mill site will be the retailer’s fourth location in South Carolina. The other South Carolina stores include Savannah, Mount Pleasant and Columbia.

Jeffrey Karp, founder and president of Karp Financial Strategies in Mooresville, has qualified for the “Top of the Table” of the Million Dollar Round Table, an association of financial professionals. Karp is a 16-year MDRT member and a three-time “Top of the Table” qualifier.

Moore & Van Allen PLLC conflicts counsel Sarah Byrne, litigation associates Cabell Clay and Mindy Vervais, and litigation member Paul Peralta received Safe Alliance’s Commitment to Justice Award. Moore & Van Allen also received a Commitment to Justice Award for overall efforts. The Commitment to Justice Awards are given in recognition of each attorney’s 2013 pro bono contributions to Moore & Van Allen’s Domestic Violence Pro Bono Project.

Union County Human Resources received the EXCEL Gold Award for 2013 from the Society for Human Resource Management. The award recognizes a chapter’s accomplishments and strategic activities and initiatives that promote the human resources profession at the local level.

Warren Norman Company Inc. announced the groundbreaking of a 102-room Hampton Inn and Suites in Fort Mill. The six-story hotel will be located at 1520 Carolina Place Drive, across from Baxter Village. The property is owned by Catawba Hotel Associates II LLC and will be operated by Strand Development Company, LLC, under direction of the Warren Norman Company Inc., and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2015.

Chris Wilson, director at Charlotte’s Moving Pictures Studios, won a 2014 Telly Award for the marketing video he produced for French dental products company, Septodont. Produced in five languages, Wilson’s video was chosen from among 12,000 entries worldwide for excellence in cinematography and editing. The Telly award honors video and film productions, cable TV commercials and programs, and online commercials and films.

Dr. R. John Young, founder of McLaughlin Young Group, was appointed as Ireland’s First Honorary Consul for North Carolina. Young is the author of “The Five Essential Leadership Questions” and has more than 30 years of experience coaching executives to lead change within their organizations. Young, a leading member of the Irish community in Charlotte for many years, has helped found the Irish Society of Charlotte in 1986 and served as its president. McLaughlin Young Group works with individuals, management and organizations to address the issues affecting the health and productivity of the workforce.
