Gas prices in the Charlotte metro and in the Carolinas were flat over the last week despite summertime demand that is still high.

As of early Tuesday, the average price of a gallon of unleaded gas in the Charlotte area remained just under $2 a gallon, auto group AAA said. Average prices in North and South Carolina also remain under that mark thanks to ample gas supplies nationwide.

Gas prices across the U.S. are the lowest they have been for this time of the year since 2004, AAA said in a report this week.

Prices fluctuated in the Midwest over the week because of supply issues at certain refineries, AAA said, but unless there is some dramatic shift, national gas supplies should end August at their highest level on record.

That should translate to continued low prices at the pump as summer winds down -- although unforeseen events like hurricanes could sway prices.

Below are the average prices in the Charlotte area, in the Carolinas and in the U.S. AAA surveys 120,000 stations nationwide to determine average prices.
