A mortgage company is laying off over 75 workers in Charlotte. Here are the details.
A Chicago-based mortgage company is laying off dozens of Charlotte workers early in the new year, according to a notice filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
Interfirst Mortgage Company is permanently laying off 77 employees from its Charlotte offices on Glen Lake Drive near Billy Graham Parkway and the airport. The layoffs will begin on Jan. 21, or within two weeks of that date, the company said in the document that it was required to file with the state.
The layoffs will include 49 mortgage loan originators, 10 national account executives, as well as one regional sales manager and a handful of other employees in different roles. The company said it was notifying affected workers.
Interfirst is a $36 billion mortgage loan originator with a retail, wholesale and correspondent lending business. Its headquartered in Rosemont, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. According to its website, the company is also hiring for jobs.
In the report provided to the state Commerce Department, Interfirst did not provide a reason for the layoffs.
Interfirst did not respond to repeated requests for comment from the Observer this week.
Businesses that have announced plans to either close a facility or conduct a mass layoff are required, under certain circumstances, to notify the state via a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification — commonly called a WARN notice. Companies are required to notify workers of a layoff 60 days in advance.
