Truist bank is investing $5.3 million to support scholarships, research and career development at UNC Charlotte.

The investment will launch the Truist Institute for Student Success. It will house programs focused on supporting education, research and career development, particularly for students in financial need and those who have been “historically excluded” from a college education.

“We are grateful to Truist for their investment in our university and recognition of the transformative power of a Charlotte education,” Chancellor Sharon Gaber said in a Tuesday news release.

The institute will focus on three broad areas: research, student athlete support and scholarships, and experiential learning and leadership development. The start date of the programs have not been determined yet, according to the university.

Plans call for a new four-year scholarship, an internship program with the bank and leadership development opportunities for first-generation and other historically excluded students.

For example, the Truist Scholars Program will provide historically excluded students with financial need a four-year scholarship, with the aim of making a UNCC education more attainable and affordable for those groups.

In the Truist Student Accelerator Program, students with demonstrated financial need will get full tuition and fees paid, and a guaranteed internship with the bank.

In a statement, Truist CEO Bill Rogers said he hoped the institute would “enhance workforce development in North Carolina and beyond.”

Atlanta-based SunTrust and Winston-Salem-based BB&T merged to form Truist in 2019, and picked Charlotte for the new bank’s headquarters. The bank employs about 2,800 employees in the area.

UNC Charlotte, a part of the public UNC system, enrolls nearly 30,500 students.
