Bank of America permanently closes Dilworth branch in Charlotte shopping center
Bank of America is permanently closing one of its more centrally located branches in Charlotte, the latest in a series of incremental moves to shrink its local network of brick-and-mortar locations.
The bank is permanently closing its location at 1235 East Blvd .in the Dilworth neighborhood, according to recent filings with the Office of the Comptrollers of the Currency. The branch is in the Kenilworth Commons shopping center.
The branch has been temporarily closed for over two years, Bank of America told the Charlotte Observer in a Thursday statement. It originally shuttered in March 2020, but the location was just marked permanently closed in OCC filings this month.
The Charlotte-based bank has closed a number of branches in its headquarter city over the last year, part of a pre-pandemic plan to optimize its brick-and-mortar network as customers do more of their banking online.
Though the branch was centrally located, there are other locations within a few miles, including at 751 Providence Road in Myers Park and 301 S. Kings Drive, near uptown.
The bank has also permanently closed a location at 2950 Union Road in Gastonia, according to a separate filing. The branch was officially shuttered as of July 12, the filing said.
Closing Charlotte bank branches
Bank of America also has closed hundreds of locations nationwide.
This year’s local closures include a branch on Sharon Road and a university-area location on Prosperity Church Road, in addition to several closures in the suburbs.
Though several locations have shut down, Bank of America still has plenty of branches in Charlotte: 47, according to its online branch locator.
It’s also still the largest bank in Charlotte by deposits: Bank of America holds 62% of deposits in the metro area. Second on the list is Truist, with 16%, and Wells Fargo, with 14%.
Those banks have also made closures. Charlotte-based Truist shut down a total of 15 local branches in the last year, part of merger-related efforts to address overlap in SunTrust and BB&T branch networks. The two banks merged to form Truist in 2019.
And Wells Fargo closed a branch in north Charlotte this spring.
