If you frequent the area of West Charlotte, chances are you’ve passed by a construction project located at the corner of Bryant Street and Freedom Drive.

The project, which is contracted by Shamrock Building Systems and Churchill Contracting according to signage, seems to have begun development in 2019. However, a lack of further details has left some wondering what the building will be once it’s complete.

According to documents from the city of Charlotte, the plot located at 1451 Bryant St. will soon be a self-storage facility called CubeSmart Self Storage, one of several locations in the Queen City and surrounding areas.

Project details provided by city indicate that it was set to be completed two years ago, but facility hours online give a vague projection for opening of just “March.”

The project description proposes that the development will have its own associated parking lot with 56 spaces and boasts “improvements to Bryant Street and sidewalks along Freedom Drive as part of the West Morehead Pedestrian Overlay District.”

The plot of land that the new self-storage facility will be on was previously occupied by Carolina Cooks, a food service equipment supplier. Before the building was demolished to make way for CubeSmart, the 60-year-old building featured 31,344 square feet on 1.34 acres of land.

According to online listings of the property, the sale price was set at $2.95 million. Carolina Cooks is still in business, but has relocated to 1935 John Crosland Junior Way Drive, Charlotte, NC 28208.
