Prime uptown property has been eyed for new NFL stadium. It’ll hit the market soon.
One of the largest pieces of land available for development in uptown will go on the market for sale shortly after the first of the year, according to Charlotte Pipe and Foundry.
Its 55-acre property also is one of the sites that’s been eyed for a potential new stadium for the Panthers.
The company has operated on the site at South Clarkson Street and West Summit Avenue for more than 100 years but announced in May 2020 it was moving its operations to Oakboro in Stanly County.
Last December, the company’s petition to rezone the land to a mixed-use district won unanimous City Council approval. The zoning paves the way for retail, hotels, restaurants and possibly even a stadium to be built on the site.
David Tepper, the billionaire owner of the Carolina Panthers, has previously cited the foundry land as a possible home for a new stadium. The team has made no such commitments to date.
Charlotte Pipe and Foundry’s property is within a few blocks of the Panthers’ Bank of America Stadium, which also is home to Tepper’s MLS team, Charlotte FC.
Pipe and Foundry property attracts interest
National developers have already expressed interest in the property since Charlotte Pipe and Foundry announced it would be relocating to Stanly County, according to Chip Mark, founder and CEO of Mark Real Estate Advisors. Mark is a longtime consultant to Charlotte Pipe and Foundry, according to a Wednesday news release.
Mark will be working with commercial real estate firm CBRE, which the pipe and foundry company has partnered with to market the property.
The property, which Charlotte Pipe and Foundry used to cast iron, will be dubbed none other than The Iron District.
So far, we don’t know the price the property will be listed on the market for.
Charlotte Pipe and Foundry made news earlier in the week for a Union County project. It is considering an approximately $100 million expansion of its current plant in Monroe over a 10-year period.
