Here’s what a century-old mill in west Charlotte will look like after redevelopment
So what will the redevelopment of an early 20th-century textile mill in west Charlotte into retail, office and residential space look like?
Atlanta-based Portman Holdings and leasing company Foundry Commercial shared renderings of the transformation of the Savona Mill at 500 S. Turner Ave. into 200,000-square-foot office and retail space, plus about 600 apartments. It’s the first phase of development at the 30-acre site that will include an outdoor amphitheater, green spaces, a rooftop deck and a plaza.
The adaptive-reuse vision includes vaulted ceilings, restored hardwood flooring and expansive windows.
“When we were forming plans for the redevelopment, it was important that we pay homage to the original building by keeping many of the elements – such as reused wood flooring, wherever possible – in the design,” Travis Garland, executive vice president of Portman Holdings, said in a statement.
The project includes outdoor spaces and a focus on expanding access to the Stewart Creek Greenway along the northern edge of the property. The companies did disclose the cost of the investment.
Working with Portman on the project are: Durham-based Alliance Architecture, lead designer for the office and retail space; Charlotte-based Edifice, general contractor; the Charlotte office of Kimley-Horn, civil engineering; and Durham-based Surface 678, landscape design.
Foundry Commercial will be handling office and retail leasing at Savona Mill.
The timeline for the project in the Seversville neighborhood:
▪ Demolition and site prep work is underway.
▪ Construction will begin early next year.
▪ Savona Mill office and retail development is expected to finish in early 2023.
▪ The first phase of residential will be completed in late 2023.
