Harris Teeter makes another change to its hours of operation during COVID

Harris Teeter is once again cutting back on store hours as the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact business.

Harris Teeter will temporarily shorten most store operating hours from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. starting Monday, the company said in an email to its loyalty card customers Friday afternoon. Some stores had been open until 10 p.m. or 11 p.m.

The change, which will help the employees restock and clean stores, is in place until further notice, according to the company.

In September, the Matthews-based grocery chain also shortened hours citing labor shortage issues to 9 p.m. The company website has continued to list the temporary hours.

It was not immediately clear when the supermarkets resumed regular hours. A Harris Teeter spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment Friday.

Impact of Harris Teeter change in hours

The new hours are in effect for the more than 60 Charlotte region stores.

The call message for store hours at Charlotte-area stores says the supermarkets may temporarily adjust their hours to support the well-being of workers and customers.

Pharmacy hours vary at each store, typically closing earlier than the grocery store, according to the company message.

The change in hours does not impact 13 stores. That includes Cameron Village and Old Raleigh Village in Raleigh, University Mall in Chapel Hill and Erwin Square in Durham, as well as other stores in North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The latest change in hours will help employees process ExpressLane orders, prepare for the following day, and provide time for cleaning, according to the company.

The grocer also said customers can shop online at Harris Teeter ExpressLane.

Harris Teeter, a subsidiary of Kroger Co. based in Ohio, has about 35,000 workers in more than 250 stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and the District of Columbia.
