The first in-shop Sephora at Kohl’s is opening near Charlotte, with more planned
A national department store and a national beauty product supplier are bringing their shop-in-shop concept to the Charlotte region.
Sephora at Kohl’s opens Friday at 601 Sherman Place in Waxhaw, according to Kohl’s.
Four more Sephora at Kohl’s stores will open this year in North Carolina. That includes more stores this summer in the Charlotte market at 9617 E Independence Blvd. in Matthews, 350 W. Plaza Drive in Mooresville, as well as 1920 Catawba Valley Boulevard in Hickory and 1010 Hanes Mall Blvd. in Winston-Salem.
The two companies plan to open 850 Sephora’s at Kohl’s in 36 states by the end of next year.
Last year, 200 Sephora at Kohl’s opened, including three fall openings in North Carolina in Fayetteville, Garner and Wilmington and two in South Carolina in Summerville and Lexington.
Another 400 will open this year, including one in Myrtle Beach, and 250 next year, according to Kohl’s.
“Consistent with our strategy, Sephora adds tremendous credibility to Kohl’s as a more useful upscale and modern retailer,” Kohl’s CEO Michelle Gass said during the company’s third-quarter earnings call in November.
She said 25% of customers coming for Sephora are first-time Kohl’s shoppers, are younger and more diverse, and are not just buying cosmetics.
“The quick and vast roll-out of Sephora at Kohl’s is a testament to how much we believe in this partnership,” said Doug Howe, Kohl’s chief merchandising officer, in a statement.
More about Sephora at Kohl’s
Sephora at Kohl’s is a 2,500-square-foot store in front of Kohl’s.
The store is similar to freestanding Sephora locations with an assortment of makeup, skincare, hair and fragrance products. Stores are staffed with Sephora-trained employees for consultations and help to find products.
Sephora also is adding six beauty brands this spring: Murad, Clarins, Jack Black, Living Proof, Versace and Voluspa.
“Since our partnership with Kohl’s began, we’ve always had the intention to keep the Sephora at Kohl’s beauty assortment as relevant and similar to our freestanding Sephora stores as possible,” Artemis Patrick, Sephora’s executive vice president and global chief merchandising officer, said in the news release.
Sephora at Kohl’s isn’t the beauty brand’s first partnership.
Sephora began opening stores inside JCPenney in 2006, according to the company. Locations include Carolina Place mall in Pineville, Carolina Mall in Concord and Windsor Mall in Matthews, according to Sephora’s website.
And, Sephora has stand-alone stores in the Charlotte area, including at Arboretum, Atherton Mill and SouthPark mall, plus two locations that opened last year Concord Mills and Birkdale Village in Huntersville.
Sephora has more than 2,700 stores in 35 countries, according to the company. And Kohl’s has more than 1,100 stores in 49 states, including 11 in the Charlotte region.
