Fast-casual seafood restaurant makes a splash in South End with its second NC store

A new seafood spot has swum into South End.

Chicago-based Brown Bag Seafood Co. debuted Monday at 100 W. Worthington Ave. on the ground floor of Lowe’s Tech Hub.

The fast-casual, counter-service restaurant menu includes such fare as grilled salmon, shrimp or a rotating daily catch, plus chicken, vegetarian and vegan options.

In August, the rapidly expanding chain made its North Carolina debut, opening at Birkdale Village in Huntersville, The Charlotte Observer previously reported. A third store is expected to open early next year at 601 S. Tryon St. inAlly Center in uptown Charlotte.

The 8-year-old chain began expanding outside of Chicago two years ago, opening two stores in Georgia. Brown Bag Seafood now has four stores in Georgia and nine in Illinois, according to the company website.

What to expect at Brown Bag Seafood

Brown Bag’s menu includes customized counter options by first choosing from daily catch, salmon, shrimp, cod, tuna or chicken and veggie options starting at $9.65, according to the company website. Step two is a choice of making it a sandwich, salad, taco or “powerbox,” such as a mix of quinoa, wheatberry, brown rice, spinach and herbs.

The menu also has “Big Fish & Specials” like a lobster roll with truffle parmesan tots, fish and chips, and a seasonal special called The CLT. Prices range from $12.25 to $34.

Soups and sides include spicy cauliflower, chowder and slaws. Top of the meals with homemade sauces and dressings like supergreen garlic and herb, golden ginger lime and sesame soy sriracha.

Brown Bag says it uses “fresh, sustainably sourced seafood flown in from around the world every day.”

South End restaurant hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-8:30 pm. Sunday.
