Cabarrus County, Concord and Kannapolis declare states of emergency amid COVID-19

Cabarrus County, its cities of Concord and Kannapolis and towns of Midland and Mount Pleasant declared a states of emergency on Thursday due to COVID-19.

The declaration helps the county and municipalities seek federal money related to COVID-19 preparation, response and recovery, officials said. Mecklenburg and Gaston counties declared states of emergency on Sunday.

The declarations also allow for officials to take action against price gouging — “anyone who tries to sell goods or services at excessive prices,” according to a joint news release by the county and its municipalities.

The Cabarrus Health Alliance — Cabarrus County’s public health authority — announced Monday the county’s first confirmed case of COVID-19. The alliance has since learned that a non-resident traveling through the county tested positive and is receiving care in a local facility while the North Carolina State Lab confirms the COVID-19 diagnosis.

Gov. Roy Cooper previously declared a state of emergency in North Carolina.
