Union County says person who died from coronavirus lived in nursing home

A Union County man in his 70s who had COVID-19 has died. The man’s death is the first coronavirus-related death for the county, according to the Union County Public Health Department.

Officials from the health department said in a news statement Thursday morning the man had been hospitalized and was “connected to a long-term care facility.”

Before contracting the coronavirus, the man had previous health complications, according to the health department.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the patient’s family and friends,” said Public Health Director Dennis Joyner. “I know this is a hard realization for our community.”

Union County has a total of 91 lab-confirmed coronavirus cases, according to the health department.

On Wednesday, Iredell County reported its first COVID-19-related death. The individual had underlying health conditions, according to a statement released by the county health department.

Mecklenburg County coronavirus update

In Mecklenburg County, there have been 10 COVID-19-related deaths. Four people in Mecklenburg have died since Sunday.

There are 848 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus, according to Mecklenburg County — around a 60% increase since this time last week when there were 533 cases.

On Wednesday, Mecklenburg County public health Director Gibbie Harris said during a news conference the models the county runs on the COVID-19 outbreak show that the increase in cases has not been as large as expected, which she said means social distancing efforts are working.

“We’re seeing some flattening of the curve, and it’s because of what you’re doing in the community,” Harris said. “…It’s absolutely necessary that you continue to comply with that.”
