Need a new hobby during coronavirus isolation? Here are some of the most popular

The coronavirus pandemic has Americans holed up inside in an effort to flatten the curve, and many are looking for new ways to pass the time.

Since movie theaters are closed and concerts have been postponed, people are taking new interest in good old fashioned hobbies, a new study found.

To determine how the pandemic has changed Americans’ interests, coupon company Picodi analyzed Google search data from March 2020 and compared it to data from March 2019.

As one might expect, the study found that interest in activities requiring people to leave their homes has dropped drastically.

Search queries for movie theaters are down 90% compared to last March and queries for other theaters are down 84%. Concerts took a 78% percent hit for the same time period, according to the study.

Perhaps less predictably, interest in foreign languages has also seen a marked decrease with search queries down nearly 30% from last March.

Now, people are turning their attention toward more traditional hobbies.

Home gyms are being searched 376% more this March than the year before, though it’s unclear if people are searching for where to find them, how to build them or exercises to do with them.

Tinkering has nearly tripled in interest with board games not far behind, the study found.

Sewing, crocheting and online games are seeing more than twice as many search queries and interest in online courses is up 92%.

Other hobbies that have seen spikes in interest are puzzles, card games and do-it-yourself projects, according to the study.
