5 new coronavirus-related deaths reported in Mecklenburg County

Mecklenburg County reported five new coronavirus-related deaths late Tuesday, bringing the total number of people who have died in the last two months to 79.

About half of the deaths recorded so far have been connected to nursing homes or long-term care facilities, according to the Mecklenburg County Health Department.

Also late Tuesday, county officials said the total number of lab-confirmed cases since mid-March among Mecklenburg residents has reached 3,379. Earlier in the day, the state reported 3,403 cases in the county. The numbers often differ as the state reports cases among people who are treated or who test positive in Mecklenburg but who live outside the county. The state and the county also have different reporting windows for new cases.
