Mecklenburg County sees biggest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases – 301

Mecklenburg County saw its biggest single-day spike in new COVID-19 cases, amid increased testing for the disease, state health officials reported Saturday.

Mecklenburg had 301 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, according to the state Department of Health and Human Resources. That surpassed the previous biggest single-day increase of 232 cases on May 29

COVID-19 has killed 106 Mecklenburg County residents, according to Saturday’s state figures. That was the same total number of deaths reported the previous day.

The number of new COVID-19 cases jumped to 5,358 since the county’s first case on March 11, state health officials reported Saturday.

Cases reach new peak statewide

Statewide, the number of new cases hit a peak Saturday as North Carolina neared testing on 500,000 people, The (Raleigh) News & Observer reported..

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported a total 992 deaths on Saturday, 26 more than a day earlier.

The number of North Carolinians hospitalized for COVID-19 fell by nine to 708 after reaching a record high of 717 on Friday.

Daily Mecklenburg cases rise sharply

Daily case counts have sharply increased in Mecklenburg County in the last three weeks, the Observer reported Friday.

The last seven days ending Friday had seen an average of 174 new coronavirus cases reported daily. The week before that — May 23-29 — the average number of daily cases was 126, and the week prior, an average 81 new daily cases were reported.

Mecklenburg Public Health Director Gibbie Harris has attributed the rise to expanded coronavirus testing and increased commercial and recreational activities by residents.
