Coronavirus case makes Charlotte’s police, fire training academy suspend operations

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and Fire Training Academy has temporarily suspended its operations after a CMPD training recruit tested positive for coronavirus, CMPD said on Wednesday in a press release.

Police said that after the COVID-19 diagnosis, the recruit was placed in the “appropriate protocol” and all classroom activity was immediately suspended.

The 36 training recruits in the class and 27 staff members who may have been exposed will be tested and quarantined, CMPD said. The facility is also being disinfected, and the department is in consultation with the Mecklenburg County Health Department, officials said.

According to a presentation to City Council, CMPD is currently short 190 officers, not including any incoming recruits.
