2 children attacked, injured by Rottweiler dogs in Newton

Two children were attacked by a pair of Rottweiler dogs in Newton on Sunday and were taken to hospitals with severe injuries, Newton police said.

The two children, ages 6 and 10, were playing in the yard at the home of Christopher Aaron Amell, on Gaither Avenue in Newton, about 4 p.m. when Amell let the dogs out of their kennels for cleaning, police said. The children were staying with Amell, who is their mother’s boyfriend, while she was at work, police said.

Amell told police that he went in his home and when he came out, the dogs were attacking the children. He helped the children into a nearby car and got one dog back in the kennel and another into the house. The children were taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center, and the 6-year-old was airflifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The dogs were being held at the Catawba County Animal Shelter.

Police said an investigation was continuing. Dan Duffey
