An 8-year-old Catawba County boy was hit Monday morning while waiting for the school bus and had to be airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center, Maiden Police Chief Tracy Ledford said.
At about 6:59 a.m., police received a call for service reporting that a child had been struck by a car in the 500 block of East Main Street. Ledford said he did not know the extent of the boy’s injuries.
“Although the investigation is continuing, our initial findings indicate he was standing outside his residence, waiting on the bus to arrive,” said Ledford.
When the bus approached his home and started to slow down, the boy ran out into the roadway and was struck by a Chevy Malibu, said Ledford.

Ledford said witnesses reported that the bus had not yet stopped or activated its stop arm. He added that police believe the car was traveling 30 to 35 miles per hour at the time. The speed limit in the area is 35.
It is unclear whether charges will be filed.
