Ziyanna Oliphant, the 9-year-old whose tearful plea to Charlotte City Council went viral this fall, is now featured in a Microsoft video that celebrates “the spirit of the season.”
Ziyanna addressed the council after the Charlotte street protests sparked by the fatal shooting of Keith Lamont Scott by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer in September.
The Microsoft video shows Ziyanna saying to the council, “We need our fathers and mothers to be by our side.”

Microsoft starts its video by saying, “This holiday season, we brought together a group of people who are making a difference in the world. This is their vision of hope, peace and beauty.”
Ziyanna appears 33 seconds into the video, which is a minute and 43 seconds long. She appears right after a quick video of street protesters.
Ziyanna and her speech were featured by media outlets around the world, especially the full part of that quote: “It’s a shame that our fathers and mothers are killed and we can’t see them anymore. It’s a shame that we have to go to the graveyard and bury them. We need our fathers and mothers to be by our side.”
