Plane veers off end of runway while landing at Monroe airport

A pilot and three passengers escaped injury when their small Beechcraft Baron plane went off the end of the runway Wednesday morning while landing at Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport in Monroe, city spokesman Pete Hovanec said.

Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration were expected to arrive at the airport Wednesday afternoon to determine why the plane went off the runway, Hovanec said.

The plane sustained significant damage to its landing gear, he said.

Hovanec said it’s not clear where the plane originated. He said the FAA would be the agency to release that detail and others, including the identities of the pilot and passengers.

The city’s job was to secure the area of the wreck with fire and other emergency personnel, Hovanec said.
