The driver of a truck from which concrete spilled onto westbound Independence Boulevard in Matthews on Wednesday morning has been cited for failure to secure a load, police said.

The spill closed the westbound lanes from Windsor Square Drive to Sam Newell Road from about 5 to 9 a.m. as firefighters worked to hose the concrete off the road. Two snow plows from the state Department of Transportation also were called in to help.

Matthews police on Thursday said they issued the citation to Robert Lee Barrett, an employee of Blue Dot Readi-Mix.

Founded in 2004, the company is based in Mint Hill and operates concrete plants in Charlotte, Harrisburg, Monroe, Statesville and Indian Land, S.C.

A Blue-Dot official declined to comment on Thursday.
