East Charlotte car chase injures officer, ends in crash

An officer suffered minor injuries during the pursuit of a stolen car Wednesday afternoon in east Charlotte.

Police found the stolen vehicle, a 2005 Kia Optima, near Central Avenue and Sharon Amity Road at 1:12 p.m., and two officers attempted to stop the car. As the officers tried stopping the vehicle, police said the driver of the stolen car took off and hit an officer, police said.

The other officer pursued the vehicle, and the stolen car hit another car near Central Avenue and Morningside Drive, police said. The people in that car declined medical treatment.

The officer continued to chase the stolen car down Logie Avenue, where it hit a tree, police said. The driver, a man, attempted to escape on foot but was taken into custody. A female passenger in the car was also detained, and both members of the stolen vehicle were taken to a hospital.

The injured officer was taken to Carolinas Medical Center for his minor injuries.

The suspects were not identified, pending formal charges, police said.
