Lancaster pedestrian dies after walking in front of car
A pedestrian near downtown Lancaster was struck by a car and died Thursday, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The Lancaster County coroner has not yet identified the pedestrian.
The accident happened around 3 p.m. on S.C. 914 near Jefferson Street, just east of downtown Lancaster, said Cpl. Bill Rhyne of the highway patrol.
The driver of the car, 17-year-old Kevon Drakeford of Heath Springs, was not charged in the accident, Rhyne said, because the pedestrian walked into oncoming traffic.
Drakeford, who was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Impala, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, Rhyne said. The pedestrian was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center and later died, Rhyne said.
