One person was killed and another is facing charges in a multi-vehicle crash in north Charlotte Friday night.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, 37-year-old Travis Narada Chappell left an Exxon convenience store in the 2500 block of Beatties Ford Road after a disturbance. Police said he left in a gold Ford Taurus and was driving south on Beatties Ford Road in a “reckless manner.”

Chappell was speeding with no head lights or tail lights, officers said.

Officers tried to initiate a traffic stop, but Chappell continued speeding and drove through two red lights. Police said Chappell then struck the rear of a Dodge Neon after driving through a red light on Beatties Ford at French Street. Chappell then struck a brick wall, according to police.

Chappell was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with minor injuries. Police say a passenger in his vehicle, 48-year-old Evelyn Elaine Smith, was pronounced dead on scene by MEDIC.

The driver of the Dodge Neon and her 2-year-old child were taken to Presbyterian Hospital with minor injuries. Officers say a third vehicle involved in the incident was struck by debris.

Officers say Chappell was impaired at the time of the wreck. Speed and alcohol are factors in this wreck, police say.

Chappell will be charged with felony death by motor vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, careless-reckless and possession of drug paraphernalia after he is released from the hospital. Chappell was also charged with driving while impaired and driving on a revoked license.
