Wildfire spreads to more than 500 acres near Black Mountain

A wildfire reported near Black Mountain on Tuesday had spread to more than 500 acres and burned five structures, but hundreds of firefighters working in rugged terrain appeared to be getting the fire under control by Wednesday, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported.

No major injuries were reported, although at least five structures were burned, authorities told the paper. Officials said firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for several more days.

Large clouds of smoke have been visible from nearby Interstate 40 at Black Mountain, about two hours northwest of Charlotte.
