A man in a wheelchair was struck and killed early Saturday while attempting to cross a road in north Charlotte, authorities said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were called to the 700 block of W. Sugar Creek Road shortly after 12:30 a.m., where they found a man seriously injured. The man, identified as 46-year-old Dandy Eugene Duncan, was hit by an unknown vehicle while trying to cross the street, police said.

Duncan, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center, where he died a few hours later, according to police.

He wasn’t in a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing at the time of the collision, officials said. His wheelchair also didn’t have reflectors.

Police are trying to find the driver of the vehicle, but don’t have a suspect or vehicle information.

But authorities did say that the suspect vehicle will have front damage to the headlights, and that the remaining headlight parts will be sun-faded.
