Driver dies after hitting tree in south Charlotte’s Colonel Francis Beatty Park

A Charlotte driver was killed Sunday afternoon in a single car crash inside Colonel Francis Beatty Park, at 4330 Weddington Road.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said they arrived to find a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu had run off the road. Medic staff pronounced the driver dead at the scene. The victim’s name was not released early Monday.

The vehicle was traveling in the park toward Weddington Road and crossed into the oncoming lane before driving off the roadway, according to a preliminary investigation. The vehicle then struck a light pole and a tree. The driver was wearing a seat belt, police said. Speed was not a contributing factor in the crash, police said
