For those getting an early jump on their Christmas shopping lists, it’s time to add one item: oatmeal.

Myers Park Baptist Church has launched its annual “oatmeal and staples” drive to feed the region’s homeless.

The church encourages people to donate oatmeal, canned goods and other non-perishable items.

Donors can drop off items at the following Charlotte locations: the Cornwell Center at 2001 Selwyn Ave.; the Heaton Hall Foyer at Myers Park Baptist; Pearlz Oyster Bar at 7804 Rea Road, and Miro Spanish Grill at 12239 N Community House Road.

The region’s homeless shelters will distribute the food.

The church is also accepting monetary contributions so that it can buy food in bulk. Those who wish to donate money can get instructions on how to do so here.

Over the past decade, the oatmeal drive has collected more than a million pounds of food, according to Bob Bishop, a deacon at Myers Park Baptist.
