A four-vehicle wreck has blocked three lanes of Interstate 77 southbound at LaSalle Street Exit 12 in Charlotte Wednesday morning.

The wreck happened about 7:20 a.m. and has backed up traffic.

A wreck shortly before 8 a.m. blocked the right lane of I-77 northbound near John Belk Freeway Exit 9B, but the lane quickly was reopened, state highway officials said.

Earlier Wednesday, emergency crews responded to a wreck with two reported pin-ins in the 5000 block of Lakeview Road, off Reames Road in north Charlotte.

The wreck happened about 6:40 a.m. when a Toyota Corolla crossed the center line and struck a Toyota Highlander SUV head on, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

Two occupants of the vehicles were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

“The air bags and safety features did their job,” an officer at the scene said.

Later Wednesday, commuters and uptown residents should expect delays in the center city and at Charlotte Douglas International Airport when President Barack Obama visits the Queen City, police said.

Obama is scheduled to arrive in Charlotte at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday and leave after 4 p.m.

As with previous visits by the president, Obama’s exact route to and from the airport won’t be announced, for security reasons.
