Driver was speeding in wreck that killed 3 in Union County, troopers say
A driver was speeding when he veered off U.S. 601 in Union County last week, killing himself and two passengers, the State Highway Patrol said.
Driver Gabriel Martinez Castro, 24, and passengers Diana Laura Romero, 23, and Rosa Isela Flores, 16, were killed in the wreck, media outlets reported.
After leaving the highway at Sikes Mill Road, the southbound Volkswagen Jetta overturned and struck a tree and a utility pole, according to reports.
Neither adult had a seatbelt on, Charlotte TV station WSOC reported. It was unknown if Rosa Flores was wearing a seatbelt.
The wreck happened about 4 miles north of Monroe late Thursday and shut down the highway for hours.
