19-year-old community college student killed overnight in University City area

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers were doing a welfare check on Barton Creek Drive late Monday when they found a man dead from a gunshot wound.

The victim was identified as 19-year-old Jervais Wan Ya Cain.

Cain, who was from Charlotte, began studying business administration at Central Piedmont Community College in August, the college said Tuesday.

It was the city’s 80th homicide of the year.

Cain was found on the 500 block of Barton Creek Drive off North Tryon Street shortly before 11 p.m. Monday. Charlotte TV station WSOC reported that his body was discovered in an apartment.
