Want to cut your own Christmas tree? Here’s where to go in the Charlotte area.
The Charlotte region has plenty of family-owned farms offering cut-your-own Christmas trees grown in their fields and pre-cut trees from the N.C. mountains. Here are nine of them. Some also offer holiday-related family activities. As a bonus, we’ve included a couple of longtime family farms from the mountains where you can choose and cut Fraser firs, the official Christmas tree of North Carolina .
Catawba County
Santa’s Forest: 4071 Herter Rd., Maiden. Its their final year. Owners Gale and Fred Herter are thanking everyone by selling their field-grown Leyland cypress for $20, the same price as when Santa’s Forest opened 15 years ago. Many trees are 12 feet tall. Pre-cut $45 Fraser firs and Carolina sapphire are also available. Ride a zipline that’s more than 400 feet long for $6. There’s also farm animals, hayrides, , marshmallow roasts, a bouncy house, a 21-foot slide and handmade wreaths. It will be open from Friday, Nov. 24 from 9 a.m. to dark and continuing through Sat., Dec. 9. Hours are noon to dark Sundays and Tuesdays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to dark Saturdays. Gaston County
Stowe Dairy Farms: 169 Stowe Dairy Rd., Gastonia. Leyland cypress and red cedar are $40. Check the farm’s website and Facebook page for updates on the availability of trees grown on the farm, as drought over the years claimed about 3,000 trees. Plenty of pre-cut trees from the North Carolina mountains available – Fraser firs, Colorado blue spruce and Norway spruce. Prices vary from $45 to $120. Farm-made wreaths and other Christmas items are for sale. Visitors can also roast marshmallows, make ornaments and go on hayrides. Santa Claus visits from 1 to 6 p.m. on two Saturdays: Nov. 25 and Dec. 2. It opens at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 24, and closes at 6 p.m. On weekdays, it’s open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stop by between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturdays and noon and 6 p.m. on Sundays. To celebrate its 10th anniversary of family Christmas traditions, the farm is starting a memory tree and invites everyone to bring their photos made in the Gaston Mall Santa chair, which the farm now owns and has on its property. Lancaster County, S.C.
Pa Pa John’s Christmas Tree Farm: 6980 Flat Creek Rd., Kershaw. The farm has Eastern red cedar, Carolina sapphire, Leyland cypress and Blue Ice, as well as pre-cut Fraser firs. Trees are $25 and up. There’s also baling, tree shaking, stands and handmade wreaths. Stop by between 10 a.m and 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and between 1 and 5 p.m. on Sundays. Lincoln County
Cedar Lake Tree Farm: 5829 N.C. 27, Iron Station, between Stanley and Lincolnton. The farm has choose-and-cut cedars and Virginia pine for $25. There will also be pre-cut Fraser firs, with prices between $25 and $150. Visitors can also climb haystacks, see farm animals and browse the general store. It opens Friday, Nov. 24, and closes Wednesday, Dec. 20. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Sundays. Grace Tree Farm: 1292 Beth Haven Church Rd., Denver. There are Leyland cypress, Carolina sapphire and white pine to choose and cut. Pre-cut Fraser firs are also available. Prices range from $38 to $72. Opens Friday, Nov. 24 from 9 a.m. to dark. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to dark Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to dark Sundays through Dec. 16. Helms Christmas Tree Farm: 6345 Christmas Tree Ln., Vale. Get white pine, red cedar, Leyland cypress, Colorado blue spruce and Carolina sapphire. Pre-cut Fraser firs are also available. Prices start at $37.50. Visitors can also go on covered-wagon rides. Train rides are available for kids younger than 10. Pinetop Christmas Tree Farm: 830 Majolica Rd., Salisbury. Find white pine, Scotch pine, Leyland cypress and Blue Ice for $6 per foot. Pre-cut Fraser firs are also available. Fresh wreaths and garland are for sale, and visitors can enjoy free hayrides. The farm is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays through Sunday, Dec. 17. Penland Christmas Tree Farm: 6457 Campbell Rd., York. Browse the Carolina Sapphire, Leyland cypress, red cedar, Virginia pine and white pine trees. Pre-cut Fraser firs are also available, as are stands, farm-made wreaths and bows, children’s trees and candy cane trees. Visitors can roast marshmallows and go on an educational farm tour. N.C. mountains
Trek to the mountains to cut a Fraser fir on any of about 40 family-owned farms that belong to the N.C. Christmas Tree Farm Association. Find a list at www.ncchristmastrees.com.

Frosty’s Choose and Cut: 2152 Beaver Creek School Rd., West Jefferson. The Sexton family has specialized in Fraser firs since 1960.
